Both of these movies served as a recap from the anime and feature newly adapted animation and voice acting. They were both released in October of 2012. Beginnings features the theme song "Luminous" by ClariS, while Eternal features "Hikari Furu" by Kalafina.
Part 1: Beginnings Edit
Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are offered a contract with Kyubey, a mysterious creature that creates magical girls. The girls meet Mami Tomoe, an upperclasswoman and a veteran magical girl who coaches them through killing witches. Homura Akemi, a magical girl who recently transferred to their school, is heavily against Madoka becoming a magical girl, for reasons revealed in Eternal. Sayaka becomes a magical girl to save her childhood friend and crush, Kyousuke Kamijou, but falls into despair after learning that Hitomi Shizuki plans to confess to him, and becomes the witch known as Oktavia von Seckendorff.
Part 2: Eternal Edit
Kyubey reveals that magical girls turn into witches if they cannot purify their soul gems. Kyoko Sakura, a magical girl that bonded with Sayaka in Beginnings, wishes to save her from her fate. She takes Madoka with her to hopefully awaken the happiness in her, but fails and decides to sacrifice herself to destroy the witch. Later, Homura shows that she has created multiple timelines in hopes of saving Madoka from the witch Walpurgisnacht, who has killed her in previous timelines. Homura decides to take Walpurgisnacht head on, but is defeated, making her feel like her efforts have been useless. To save her, Madoka makes a contract with Kyubey and becomes a magical girl. However, due to the multiple timelines created around her, she becomes incredibly powerful, and rewrites the universe to keep all magical girls from suffering the same fate. She disappears and creates "paradise," taking Sayaka with her. In the end, Homura is the only one that remembers that she ever existed.
